Train on EPS Foundations

In 1997 this train sank into the bog in Ballisodare, Co Sligo. The stone under the railway line was replaced with 2m of EPS 300 which reduced the loading onto the ground by 90%. An English Construction team was brought over to do the project as the relevant experience was not available in Ireland at the time, to the annoyance of some engineers in Irish Rail. A 500 tonne train with all its vibrations passes over this line twice a day at 120kph every day over this section of track without any restrictions for the last 13 years. The track hasn’t settled or subsided in any way and is still as good as the day it was installed, there has never been speed restrictions to this section of track.
